Diary of a Snow Shoveler --- Funniest Thing You Will Read This Season

I was sent this two Christmas' ago by an old buddy. I laughed so hard I couldn't get rid of it so I saved it to share every Christmas Season with everyone! Enjoy!

Diary of a snow shoveler, probable location - North East

December 8 - 6:00 PM

It started to snow.
The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat  for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven.
It looked like a Grandma Moses Print.
So romantic we felt like newlyweds again.
I love snow!

December 9
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape.
What a fantastic sight!
Can there be a lovelier place in the whole world?
Moving here was the best idea I've ever had!
Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again.
I did both our driveway and the sidewalks.
This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again.
What a perfect life!

December 12
The sun has melted all our lovely snow.
Such a disappointment!
My neighbor tells me not to worry- we'll definitely have a white Christmas.
No snow on Christmas would be awful!
Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again
I don't think that's possible.
Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14
Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night.
The temperature dropped to -20.
The cold makes everything sparkle so.
The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks.
This is the life!
The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again.
I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way.
I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15

20 inches forecast.
Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer.
Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels.
Stocked the freezer.
The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out.
I think that's silly.
We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16
Ice storm this morning.
Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt.
Hurt like hell.
The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17
Still way below freezing.
Roads are too icy to go anywhere.
Electricity was off for 5 hours.
I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm.
Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her.
Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her.
God I hate it when she's right.
I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20
Electricity's back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night.
More shoveling!
Took all day.
The damn snowplow came by twice.
Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey.
I think they're lying.
Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out.
Might have another shipment in March.
I think they're lying.
Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me.
I think he's lying.

December 22

Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white   shit fell today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt till August.
Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss.
By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel.
Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy.  I think the asshole is lying.

December 23
Only 2 inches of snow today
And it warmed up to 0.
The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning.
What is she, nuts?!!
Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago?
She says she did but I think she's lying.

December 24
6 inches - Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel.
Thought I was having a heart attack.
If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snow plow, I'll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel.
I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been!
Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.

December 25
Merry freaking Christmas!
20 more inches of the damn slop tonight -Snowed in.
The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil.
God, I hate the snow!
Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel.
The wife says I have a bad attitude.
I think she's an idiot.
If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.

December 26
Still snowed in.
Why the hell did I ever move here?
It was all HER idea.
She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27
Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.

December 28
Warmed up to above -20.
Still snowed in.
The BITCH is driving me crazy!!!

December 29
10 more inches.
Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in.
That's the silliest thing I ever heard.   How dumb does he think I am?

December 30
Roof caved in.
I beat up the snow plow driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only the beating I gave him, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass.
The wife went home to her mother.
Nine more inches predicted.

December 31
I set fire to what's left of the house.
No more shoveling.

January 8
Feel so good.
I just love those little white pills they keep giving me.
Why am I tied to the bed?

That is Hilarious!  I can relate to quite a bit of it growing up in Wisconsin.

That is so very funny, and I'm glad I'm not living in the north anymore.  I will be saving a copy of it too.

This is so good.

I hate snow and we've got a foot of it coming beginning this evening.  Going to mess up my weekend.

I just hope the electricity doesn't go out but, of course, I know it will.

Very funny!  Having lived in Dubuque Iowa during college (4 years of digging out my car), I'm glad Nashville only gets a couple of inches a year (and they normally melt by the next day).

Rick,  This is exactly why my parents left NE PA (Kingston, by Wilkes-Barre) to move to Naples, FL 32 years ago!  We love looking at snow, but sunsets work well too!  Very funny!  All the best for a snowy and white holiday, Michelle  P.S.  I'll be in Naples visiting and drink a margarita toast to all of you shoveling snow!

Posted by Michelle Francis, Atlanta GA (Tim Francis Realty) 7 months ago

I'm in Ohio..I can definitely relate. In fact about 2 years ago we had 2 feet in the driveway and the snow blower just could not move it. It was too heavy. Good thing I have my snow plow guy on speed dial!

I have relatives in Iowa. When I want to hear about 2 feet of snow, I call my cousin up there and listen to him complain, lol. I don't know if I could ever live in the upper part of the US ever again.

Long but cute one.  I have read a different version of this before.  Very funny and thanks for the laughs and for sharing.  So glad we don't live where there is snow anymore!

Bring it on! I love the snow, the winter and everything that goes with it. Yes we have a decent snow blower now, not so for our first winter here and we did that shovelling. But we also have the best fun of the year. Our previous house had a fantastic slope in the front we used to sled all night long with the kids. We taught our kids to ski in the back yard! It is snowing lightly now as I type. Give me this anyday over what they had in Miama last night - a foot of rain - no thanks.

I think this is even more funny to those of us who never have to deal with it.  I have lots of family in Utah and Wisconsin and they see lots of snow and all that goes with it.  I see a sprinkling occasionally and that's enough for me.

Living in Minnesota has made me jaded to this story.  According to my calculations, he had 96 inches of snow in December.  The highest total ever recorded in the Twin Cities for the month of December was 33 inches.

It's a balmy 23 here today and we have 8 inches of snow creating a beautiful white Chirstmas.

I saw this before but it had me laughing all over again.  When my husband and I left WVA in 1994 heading to NC I have pictures of me "chucking out ice" in shorts and our pooches on top of a snow bank along side our driveway -- in April!!  The winter had deposited 7 different storms of snow and ice that had compacted down solid.  We lived in a mountain community and things just didn't dissapear so fast.  Needless to say it helped re-inforce our reasons for seeking a milder climate.

I say this as I'm looking out the window at pouring down snow.

Thanks for the best laugh I had today!  I remember those days well living in New York.  The  last winter before we moved to Florida, my neighbors were ice skating on their front lawn.

There's something to be said about living in Delray Beach where the sun shines most of the time (except for today!) , palm trees, and the temps have been in the 80s.   Sure, we've had hurricanes, but they give you advance notice.  You can leave if you want.

Don't want to move there. But I would like to take my kids somewhere they could get an idea of what it means when the weather man is calling for snow. Here they say we may have a chance of snow and we could get up to 2". Boy I tell you it gets serious here. The grocery stores are sold out of bread, milk, and you don't want to wait in the lines for gas. It comes (barely dust the ground) and is melted in 30 minutes or less.

This was very funny, thanks for sharing. Yes, I always think it is beautiful but live in Sourthern Calif. If I want snow I drive an hour and I got it. Meanwhile we are in the 70's, feeling good. That works for me.

Yay! Snow! I moved to Jackson Hole, WY for the skiing and after 10 years, still LOVE IT! Going sledding on the hill outside our front door right now, then make a few afternoon snowboard runs later today.

I have lived in, and shoveled snow in, Oregon, Colorado, Wyoming and Massachussetts; so I can definitely relate.  Now I live in sunny Whittier, CA.  This week, the daily high temperature is 75.  Nights are very cold, going down to about 50.  Brrrr!

Thanks for sharing that post - very funny!  However, here in Bozeman, Montana, we have very sturdy people and we expect and are prepared for winter.  We have lots of sunshine (note - Montana is #7 on the list of Happiest places to live), so our snow (even 15 inches) doesn't last forever.  We live 6 miles from Bridger Ski Bowl, yet have no trouble driving 10 miles to town every day.  Our roads are cleared quickly, and our driveway isn't too long!  It's the most beautiful place and we love it for all 4 seasons!  Call me crazy!

Oh that is sooooo funny! This is the reason why I live in Southern California.....no white Christmas, but I'm blogging in the backyard by the pool this morning, so I'm fine with this.

Love it!  I live in the suburbs of Chicago and if I never saw snow again (it's snowing) I wouldn't miss it.  Can't wait to retire to our Scottsdale, AZ townhouse and wish I was there right now.

I always joke that I love snow as long as I am indoors looking out at it.  I love football played in the snow if I am watching on TV.

Rick, thanks for sharing.  As I'm waiting for the snow to fall here in New Jersey, I enjoyed reading your post.  My husband is out for days plowing the highways when it snows and one time about 8 years ago, he comes home after plowing for days and there I am standing outside on the front porch smoking my cigarette and there must 20 inches of snow piled high in the apron of the driveway so he can't even get his car in (of course I went outside to smoke while it was snowing but never once did I pick up a shovel) and I swear he probably wanted to shove the shovel right up my ass when I said something like....I think you need to shovel the driveway before you can get that car in.

About 2 years ago, again, another storm with me not shoveling and he comes home for a two hour break from plowing to take a shower and grab something to eat and he's outside shoveling our driveway and walkway and I yell out the door, can you make sure a path is clear so the chinese restaurant can deliver my food!  I think that time I shut the door so fast so he didn't hit me with a snowball....lol!!

Ahhh, the challenges of living in snow country!  At least we don't get -20 temps here in Tahoe!

From this side of the country I have some old stories that sound like parts of your post. I do not remember much humor in the winter of those years just a lot of work, thank god I was younger then.

Your timing is excellent for our eastern seaboard suffering under a lot of recent snow. That is the employment gift to the ambitious snow shoveler.

Thank you

Wow, this sounds so familiar, like what we were thinking after getting snowed in for 6 days last Christmas. We also called a guy to snowplow our drive, but he was "too busy". What is it with those snowplow guys?

See how our perception of things change as time goes by.

We're suppose to get between 8 to 15 inches of snow today  My kids are happy. I am not.

I was a New Yorker for most of my life- and my parents had vacation homes in the Poconos, but all I can say right now is that I LOVE SOUTH FLORIDA!!!! I moved to Miami seven years ago and have never regretted the decision, despite thet fact that it is a little cool today- it will only be in the low 70s today- but the sun is shining, the top is down on the convertible, and I'm wearing my shorts on the way to do some shopping.

I used to be a flight dispatcher at JFK airport- handling flights all over the country. That meant that even if the airport was closed for passengers and aircraft, I still had to be there to plan flights out of Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, LA, etc. I despised getting up early, shoveling out the car, the walk, and the driveway, then dealing with barely cleared roads, getting to work, and after my shift, de-icing and shoveling out the car to get home again.

When you're ready to join the fun here in paradise, let me know. Wouldn't you really rather be drinking a Mojito on the beach?

But the fire is so delightful,

And since we've no place to go,

Florida Snow

We asre under a heavy blanket of white snow in the DC area, getting deeper by the minute. We have already dug and shoveled our steps, driveway and walkway about 4 times. By tomorrow I will be stir crazy, unless the power goes out, then I will be frozen!

As many Washington, DC people are saying...this is very appropriate for 12/19/2009.

What blows my ex-Boston-ego is the buyer and the home inspector who expect to do the inspection on Sunday.  My pleas of being stuck in the snow didn't go far.  Buyer is from Chicago and thinks this is a dusting, inspector has a 4 wheel drive and sees it as a challenge.  Maybe I've been away from Boston for too long, but yes, I do remember those winters when one more storm might just break any shred of remaining matrimonial bliss !

New Year's Day...watching the Rose Parade on t.v., which originates in Pasadena, California, the following words echo across the Northeast.

"Grab the kids, honey! Pack the car! We are moving to California"

Too funny.

As a Southern California local, I couldn't imagine ever not loving a white Christmas, at least not until I had one in Pennsylvania that knocked out the electricity.  Who knew that electricity also powers the water and heating systems?  I always thought it was for lights and electronics and appliances, but well water and heating the house by heating the water in the pipes in the walls?

Now I am going to steal it and email it to a client that moved back east to the snow.

That one had me rolling! I am from the deep south so I haven't had too much of the snow to deal with but I have heard stories from my dad (growing up in Penn).

Tears are rolling down my cheeks!  That was too funny!'

Not to be mean, but I LOVE to watch the news and hear of all the awful weather up north.  The worse it is the better our sales are here in the coming months.

Clients say, I'm done!  Not one more year of shovelling snow!

It is actually cold here now, got to 59 degrees today.  I had to put a coat on.  Might go into the 40's tonight...I'll have to stay in.

I LOVE FLORIDA!!!!   Joy

As I read your blog I kept saying enough is enough. We were just left us with 20inches of that beautiful white stuff and my husband is out re-shoveling what he had shoveled earlier. We have been Rhode Islandersfor our entire lives and now we are seniors I have been trying to convince my DH that now should be the time we move to closer to our grandchildren in SC.  I could be ready in a split second, This funny but practically true blog needs to be read by my significant other when he comes in.
