DEER PROOFING With Soap! This article was taken out of a recent edition of "Cabin Living". If you have a home in the Poconos then you certainly know that you have an enormous extended family of whitetail deer who make their way through your yard on a daily basis! Although cute and friendly these herds of deer can honestly eat every form of vegetation growing on your property. This article will make you smile.
Scented soaps repel deer. Just who discovered this is not known, but leaving bars of soap about the garden deters deer. Bar soaps and soap based commercial repellents made from higher levels of fatty acids are both fairly effective in repelling deer.
To Use: Drill a small hole just large enough for a chord to pass through in a wrapped bar of soap (the wrapper keeps the soap from quickly washing away). Then tie with string and hang around the yard, in tree or shrub branches at a height that best protects the plant in question; 3 to 6 feet high for most. Alternatively, place unwrapped soap in cheesecloth bags or old nylon stockings and tie the sudsy little sachets around the garden. They will wash away more quickly, but the scent will be more intense and lingering.
Positioning the soap is important to prevent deer from browsing between the bars. Yes, scientific tests have actually been conducted to determine just how close deer can stand to feed next to soap, and the consensus is about 3 feet. Many home gardeners find the best use of soap is hanging it in fruit or ornamental trees whose branhces may fall victim to deer damage or around the perimeter of gardens.
Which Soap?? Some people insist that heavily scented soaps such as Irish Spring, are most effective. However, avoid soaps containing edible oils as a main ingredient, because at least one report recounted deer actually eating soap made of coconut oil. A 1992 Cornell University study discovered that the repellent component of soaps is tallow (animal - origin) fatty acids. And not surprisingly, it confirmed that soaps containing coconut fatty acid were not effective as repellents.
